St. Godric of Finchale

Next up is Godric of Finchale 1065–1170, England's most famous hermit. He was never cannonised so the Saint title is purely colloquial. He wrote songs throughout his life and spent his last 60 years as a hermit. Four of his songs survive in various sources, the British Library, Royal MS 5 F VII, fol. 85 contains all four. They are monophonic and a cross between plainchant and hymns. What's most interesting is they are written in a hybrid of Old English and Middle English, so a record of the exact moment the language was changing.
